Health experts have estimated the average bag of Halloween candy could have between 3,500-7,000 calories! It would take a child 44 hours of walking to burn that off, and who has time for that?

If you plan to pass out candy on Halloween, do your trick-or-treaters’ teeth and waistline a favor, and pass out some less sugary “treats” such as pretzels, raisins, goldfish, or even non-edible items with a Halloween theme. If you only want to pass out candy, try buying the kinds with fewer calories, which are typically fruity candy, not chocolate-sorry chocolate lovers! Dark chocolate has health benefits over milk chocolate, but not many kids prefer the taste of dark. You may just end up eating it yourself! To help lessen the temptation of eating the candy you purchased or received for Halloween, pick out your absolute favorite treats, and stick to those. Enjoy them! But before eating them, stop and ask yourself if you truly want it. Are you eating it just because it’s in front of you? Leave off all the other candies you could do without, and save your self some sugar and unwanted calories! Or, if you don’t practice moderation well, don’t buy candy at all! “Out of sight, out of mind” could help your waistline out this Halloween!

Be careful, these mini treats can add upfast if you eat more than a few! While eating one, savor the flavors of the treat, stop, and give yourself a few minutes to enjoy the treat. Chances are, you may become satisfied by eating only one or two treats rather than gobbling down too many too fast. Halloween isa time of fun activities; focus on the activities over the food, and enjoy it!

  

Popcorn Ball Recipe:          

1 tablespoon coconut oil (or canola oil)

3 tablespoons un-popped popcorn kernel

2 1/4 cups mini marshmellows

1 cup Cheerios

1 oz pretzel sticks, broken into pieces

1/4 cup chopped dry-roasted peanuts, salted

1 small brown paper bag

Salt to taste

1. Place kernels in a brown paper bag. Microwave 2-3 minutes until all or mostly popped.

2. Heat skillet over medium heat. Add oil and marshmallows. Cook until marshmallows melt. Remove from heat.

3. Add all ingredients to skillet and stir.

4. Sprinkle in salt if desired. Form into about 10 popcorn balls and enjoy!
